Amidst, drugs, family scandal and political turmoil, a legendary singer and songwriter rose among the times who was the most prolific singer of all times. Who are we talking about? Well, we are talking about Marvin Gaye. Through the depths of his own personal struggles throughout three decades, Marvin Gaye effortlessly brought about his sociopolitical message through his soulful music. In which today, many artists are able to use the music industry to promote change within a political dynamic world. With his rich upbringing of singing in the church to blowing up the R&B charts as an artist under Motown Records, Marvin Gaye was considered the “Prince of Soul” for over 20 years within his career as singer and songwriter. His career as vocalist, producer, composer and performer has help create a spirit of change within the music by bringing a new edge to what we call R&B, Pop and Gospel today.

He dominated the charts from 1960’s as composer/writer for various artists, such as the Marvelettes to chart stopping collaborations with Kim Weston, Tammi Terrell, Mary Wells and many more. In his study stream of success, he branched and started singing for Motown records building his own reputation with top charts such as “I Heard It Through the Grapevine”, “How Sweet It Is” and the most loved song of all times “Sexual Healing” in which he won his first two Grammy Awards including Best Male R&B Vocal Performance in February 1983.

As the social political turmoils arose in the 1960’s to the change of music era in the 1980’s, Marvin Gaye gave us a relevant ideology that music is a way for us to express our feelings to a degree that it is still affecting the music today. We salute you Marvin Gaye the Prince Of Soul!
